One night, I pressed some friends to reveal what they were on the "Type Theory" scale. Anger ensued, and changed the friendship. Another friend witnessed the transaction. He, thankfully, had the foresight to inform me that some folks do not want to be defined by this theory. I completely understood. After contemplating my own experience with "Type Theory," it occurred to me that I had been placed in a box, trapped in this negative space. Limited. That box gets pretty uncomfortable. "Type Theory" is just a tool, not a definition. Think of it as the hammer, not the nail. There are so many varieties of nails.
Words have such power. We can lift one another up with words. We can also be torn down by words. We can use words to describe perspectives. Words require some digging into true meaning - they don't always tell the whole story. Words can entertain us. Words can evoke change. Words and thoughts are behind action and reaction. Our desire to label with words can be dangerous. Words also help us understand. We should be careful with how we use words. Use the power of words for good, not evil. In that sense, we can be superheroes through words. One strength I think some people learn is to be sensitive to others' needs in measure to how we use words. Some people have to work harder at it than others. In extending the courtesy we expect for ourselves, it is necessary to tread carefully in the mine field of vocabulary.
So it occurred to me that in our society, encouragement is too sparse. There are so many lonely people longing to be heard and to hear words which lift them up. The majority of people I know have their own struggles. I want to try an experiment - think of it as a word game. I want to propose a word which can bring some positive impact to at least one person's life. I will attempt to post the word of the week each Monday for a month. Depending on how this experiment progresses, I may extend it indefinitely. Please feel free to post a sample sentence on how to use the word of the week positively in the comments section. If you know some one in need of practice, give them a link to this exercise. If you use, or know someone who uses the word of the week, tell the rest of us about it in the comments section for that word. Synonymous words count - post them in the comments. I would appreciate any suggested words you may have...post suggestions in the comments, or on my Facebook page. Have fun making music to some special recipient's ears.
